Anemia is not a disease and it is symptoms of other diseases. If anyone is Anemic then the number red blood cells circulating in the body or hemoglobin or both of them is very low. The function of hemoglobin is it produces oxygen to the tissues and cells of the body and the anemic patients have the symptoms related to the failure of oxygen. Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow and then used for circulation. Because of aging process or damages, red blood cells are eliminated from the circulation process and recycled to create new red blood cells. The red blood cells count may reduce when its formation is very low.
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia in dogs is common autoimmune system disease. In this disease, the body damages and breaks down its own red blood cells. Dogs affected by this disease have the potential to develop red blood cells in its own bone marrow but when circulated in the body, the lifetime will be very shorter than the normal red blood cells.
The primary Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) in dogs is caused because of improper functioning of the autoimmune system. It results in the incorrect formation of antibodies that targets its very own red blood cells. In the secondary AIHA, the red blood cells surface become changed by a toxin. It is essential to destroy the red blood cells that are recognized by the autoimmune system as foreign invaders. It is caused by infections, snake bites, drug reactions, toxins and chemicals. The secondary AHIA causes cancer or neoplasia disease in common.
Once the dog is affected by this disease, its main target is to either destroy the red blood cells inside the blood cells by a process known as intravascular hemolysis or damage when it circulates through spleen or liver by a process referred to extravascular hemolysis. In both of the above process, hemoglobin will be discharged.
The symptoms of this disease help you to take your dogs to the veterinarian in the initial stage of the disease. Your dog becomes very anemic and the gums turn into very pale color rather than the normal pink to red color. The anemic dogs are listless and it can become tire easily. These symptoms are caused since the dogs don’t have the adequate red blood cells to take oxygen to the tissues. To balance the lack of oxygen properly, the heart beat will be faster than the normal level and the dogs will breathe more quickly.
As the disease developed, high levels of bilirubin formed in the body which is a breakdown substance of red blood cells. Sometimes the high level of bilirubin leaks in the urine making it a dark color to look. An excessive amount of bilirubin makes the skin, gums, mucous membrane to emerge jaundice or yellow. There might be vomiting or poor appetite.
The anemic disease is tested by the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test. The pack celled volume is calculated for anemia in which the red blood cells count and cells shape and size are verified using a microscope.
